Crockmeter — Colour Fastness to Rubbing Tester
A crockmeter measures how much colour a dyed or printed fabric transfers by rubbing. The specimen is rubbed, dry or wet, against an undyed cotton rubbing cloth (crocking cloth); the staining on the cloth is rated with the grey scale. We build our crockmeters in our own workshop in Istanbul and also supply the crocking cloth.
- Measures rubbing fastness by the colour change of the specimen and the staining of the accompanying fabric.
- Specimens are rubbed against dry, undyed cotton accompanying fabric.
- The staining ratio of the accompanying fabric is evaluated on the staining grey scale.
- The automatic model has a digital controller and a motor.

Frequently asked questions
What is a crockmeter used for?
It measures how much colour a dyed or printed textile transfers to other surfaces by rubbing. The result is the grey-scale rating of the staining on the rubbing cloth.
What is the difference between dry and wet rubbing?
In dry rubbing the cloth is used dry; in wet rubbing it is wetted to a specified pick-up. Wet rubbing usually gives a lower rating; most specifications require both.
Should I choose a manual or a motorised crockmeter?
On the manual model the crank is turned by hand. The motorised model has a digital controller and a motor, so speed and stroke count do not depend on the operator — suitable for laboratories with a high daily test load.
When is a rotary crockmeter needed?
ISO 105-X16 and AATCC 116 require rotary rubbing on small areas; it is used especially for printed fabrics and small patterns where the linear crockmeter does not fit.
Do you supply crocking cloth?
Yes. We supply crocking cloth (rubbing fastness test cloth) for ISO 105-X12 and AATCC 8.
How is the result assessed?
The staining on the rubbing cloth is compared with the staining grey scale under standard lighting. A light cabinet (D65) is used for the assessment.
What are the warranty and delivery terms?
A 1-year manufacturer's warranty is given. Delivery is EXW Istanbul with export packing included.
